Application of assertive questioning via:
- Exercises to encourage students to structured their assignments i.e. by the progression of Mind-Mapping techniques development, so as, to enhance structured-thought-process and decision making.
- Specific group exercises - using Mind-Mapping techniques – to delineate what is required to achieve different grade criteria i.e. Pass, Merit and Distinction etc.
The project is to be used to effectively clarify the requirements of Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria of "BTEC Business vocational units" or "A Level Business Studies" requirements. Moreover, this experiment will also support the promotion of a deeper understanding of what is going to be taught during each block/unit of course content.
Outcomes and benefits for the students?
The project's methodology should encourage greater uptake of the Merit & Distinction options of the BTEC assignments and general raise acheivement levels. Students should also acquire a better understanding of the course content and what is expected of them. Furthermore, students should be able to learn/develop key competencies in the areas of: study skills, communications and information technology.
How will the project be measured?
The project will be measured by the number of students achieving Merit & Distinction grades and by comparing the Lecturer’s “Mind-Map” benchmark models with the student’s models.
What do I hope to learn through this experiment?
Constructivism — particularly in its "social" forms — suggests that the learner is much more actively involved in a joint enterprise with the teacher who is involved in creating ("constructing") new meanings. Consequently, the project should show me whether this assertion has validity in a Mind-Mapping application.

Sir Hilton,
You have made quite an excellent start with your supported experiment project which sets the precedence for others to emulate. Well done - Richard Dawkins
David...
This is a great idea and I have used a non-IT based version of this for the BND year 2 Recruitment and selection unit. You explained your idea at the last meeting and I based a lesson of mine on your idea. Did a board summary mind map of the criteria for the R and S assignment. It seemed to work well.
Apart from the IT basis this is a great idea! Gets the students to focus on their assignment and get the best possible grade for the work they do. They dont call you "The Buddha" for nothing.
great way of sharing info with people in the college and sharing best practice too
this has helped. it takes a bit of practice and to make it work in a classroom environment.
it takes atleast 1 class just getting the students set up
its blogtastic. it will take a bit time to get used to the mechanics of it all - but i'm sure it will be very beneficial.

Dave,
I do think that this is a fab idea- technology well used. It will also help keep track of work done as students can keep refering to it.
Maria
David, this is a brilliant idea - mind maps are excellent and a great way of connecting content and prior knowledge of students. will definitely attempt implement this!
David,
I am very excited by this project and have noted the enthusiasm of the team who have very different levels of IT expertise. I want to investigate the use of Mindmapping in my A2 business clas - what more can we do to support. I like the emphasis on learing new IT skills blended with self assessment and student directed learning. Blogtastic - will incentivate staff in the use of new technologies.

Dave,
This is a marvellous idea: it encourages focus and team / group work whilst also allowing for differentiation.
Well done and please show me how?

Dave,
This very innovative.
Well done.

Really interesting work. It ties in with the path IT Services are taking in terms of using web2.0 online services such as google docs etc to facilitate our daily functions.
A key advantage of this type of service is that it is accessible anywhere with an Internet connection. You are not restricted by the scope of the IT network so students/staff can work at home as network drives are not accessible offsite.
Hello David
An interesting idea, excellent to use for revision purposes
Will catch up with you to learn how to use it in my lessons next year :)
Hi David
This is an excellent idea. I think I will be trying it with My Alevel students.
David, good concept and I will make use of some of it for board summaries of assignment criteria in mind map form. Students can sometimes create word processed helpsheets from this. However, I find the IT aspect too complicated.
